Your Blepharoplasty Options

Your eyes are as unique as you are, which is why there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for drooping eyelids. At Phoenix Ophthalmologists and Phoenix Eye Doctors, we combine experience with innovation to offer traditional surgical and nonsurgical treatments to address your concerns.

During your consultation, we’ll explain your options and provide recommendations so you can feel confident making an informed decision.

Blepharoplasty: Traditional Eyelid Surgery

Traditional blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct drooping eyelids by removing extra skin, fat, or muscle. It can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both.

  • Before: You’ll meet with Dr. Van Buren to discuss your goals, medical history, and medications.
  • During: The outpatient procedure is done under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Dr. Van Buren will make small incisions in your eyelid creases, remove excess tissue, and carefully close them with sutures.
  • After: You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Cold compresses and pain medication can help ease these effects.

Recovery

Most patients can return to their regular activities within 1–2 weeks. To protect your skin during the healing process, avoid strenuous activities and limit sun exposure.

We’ll arrange a follow-up appointment for you in 2 weeks. We’re here to support you, prioritize your well-being, and deliver care you can trust.

Experience noticeable improvements in vision, along with a rejuvenated, youthful look. While the results are long-lasting, it’s important to note that they may gradually change over time due to the natural aging process.

Neuromodulator Injections for Eyelid Drooping

Neuromodulators, commonly used as wrinkle-relaxing injections, can be injected into the muscles that control eyelid movement. By relaxing these muscles, neuromodulators can lift the eyelid and improve vision.

What to expect:

  • Before: You will have a consultation with Dr. Van Buren to determine if you are a suitable candidate.
  • During: The injections are minimally invasive and typically take only a few minutes.
  • After: You may experience some minor bruising or discomfort at the injection sites.

Recovery

Neuromodulator injections typically require little to no downtime, meaning you can return to your daily routine immediately. This quick, convenient treatment is designed to fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Achieve a subtle, natural-looking eyelid lift with ease. Results typically last 3–4 months, and maintenance is simple with repeat treatments to keep the refreshed look you love.

Morpheus8 for Eyelid Rejuvenation

Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive procedure that uses bipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin around the eyes.

What to expect:

  • Before: You will have a consultation with Dr. Van Buren to discuss your goals and determine if you are a suitable candidate for Morpheus8.
  • During: The procedure involves a series of microneedles that deliver RF energy to the deeper layers of the skin around the eyes.
  • After: You may experience some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort.

Recovery

Most patients can return to their regular activities within a few days. During the healing process, protecting your skin by avoiding direct sun exposure and using sunscreen is important. These simple steps promote optimal results and support your recovery.

Results you can see and feel include:

  • Improved skin texture and tone around the eyes.
  • A noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

While results develop gradually, multiple treatments may be needed to achieve your desired outcome. We’re here to guide you through every step, combining experience with a personalized approach to help you look and feel refreshed.

Is Blepharoplasty Covered By Insurance?

Before your surgery, Dr. Van Buren will perform a thorough eye examination. Photography and visual field testing are recommended to determine whether blepharoplasty would be classified as cosmetic (enhancing appearance) or functional (improving vision). If excess upper eyelid skin is limiting your vision, your insurance may cover the procedure.

Dr. Van Buren’s Blepharoplasty Post-Operative Instructions

Dr. Van Buren has provided the following instructions to guide and support your post-operative care.

Ice: To reduce swelling, apply ice packs or sponges to your eyelids for 20 minutes, 6 times a day for the first 2 days. Keep ice handy, especially in the morning.

Position: Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.

Bleeding: If bleeding occurs, gently press with a clean sponge for 10–20 minutes. Clean dried blood with peroxide or soap and water.

Sutures: Stitches will dissolve on their own, with debris falling out in 1–2 weeks.

Sun protection: For 6 months, use SPF 15+ sunscreen on your eyelids. Wear a hat or sunglasses for added protection. Once you stop the post-op ointment, you can apply makeup.

Activities: You can resume normal activities in 1–2 days, but avoid heavy lifting, straining, or intense exercise for at least 3 weeks.

What to Expect During Your Blepharoplasty Recovery

Here’s what you can expect during your recovery from your blepharoplasty procedure.

Pain: Mild discomfort is normal after surgery. Contact your doctor if you have severe or persistent pain or vision changes.

Dryness: Your eyes may feel dry for a few days or weeks. Use artificial tears for relief.

Sensitivity and vision: Light sensitivity and blurred vision may last up to 10 days.

Numbness: Numbness around your eyelashes should resolve within weeks.

Swelling: Swelling may last several months, making your eyelids feel heavier.

Scarring: Scars will fade and become less noticeable within 4–12 months.

Eyelid sticking: Your eyelids may stick after surgery. Use warm water or a cotton swab to gently separate them. After day one, you can clean them with mild soap or baby shampoo.
