Our Team

Dr. Jeremy Van Buren, MD, PhD

Dr. Jeremy Van Buren joined Phoenix Ophthalmologists in 2009. Born in Peoria, IL, Dr. Van Buren moved to the valley after completing medical school and residency training at the University of Wisconsin. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physiology & Biophysics from the University of Illinois, his Master’s in Neuroscience from Northwestern University in Chicago, and his PhD in Pharmacology & Neuroscience from Southern Illinois University.

Following graduate school, Dr. Van Buren set his sights on medical school, where he decided to combine his interest in surgery with the physics of vision and the complexity of the human eye. A prolific author, Dr. Van Buren has written numerous chapters and publications on several aspects of ophthalmology, from eyelid malposition to retinal and orbital cancers.

A true believer in the benefits of international medicine, Dr. Van Buren has performed eye surgery in the Philippines and has given pharmacology and medical education lectures for the World Health Organization in India. “Dr. V” is an avid outdoorsman and spends his free time with his children exploring the great outdoors.

Stephanie Mastores, OD

Dr. Stephanie Mastores is a dedicated optometrist with a passion for both clinical excellence and compassionate care. She began her academic journey at the University of Arizona before earning both her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees from The Ohio State University.

In 2016, Dr. Mastores was honored as Arizona’s Young Optometrist of the Year, a recognition of her commitment to the profession and her patients. She currently serves as Vice President of the Arizona State Board of Optometry.

Eye care is deeply personal to Dr. Mastores. Having experienced her own vision journey—glasses at 11, contact lenses at 15, refractive surgery at 33, and glaucoma laser surgery at 35—she brings a rare empathy to every patient interaction. She’s not just a provider; she’s been the patient too.

Her passion for giving back extends globally. Dr. Mastores volunteers with Volunteers for Optometric Service to Humanity (VOSH), providing eye exams and care to underserved communities around the world. In a testament to how close this mission is to her heart, she and her husband, Mikey, were married during a VOSH eye care trip in Grenada, West Indies, in 2017.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Mastores enjoys caring for a small menagerie of dogs, cats, and desert tortoises.
