Brighten Your Vision & Appearance: Treatment for Drooping Eyelids
At Phoenix Ophthalmologists, we understand the frustrations of eyelid issues. Our experienced team, led by Dr. Van Buren, specializes in eyelid procedures that can help restore your confidence and improve your quality of life.
Do drooping eyelids make you look older than you feel? Are you squinting to see clearly? Sagging eyelids, or ptosis, can impact your sight and confidence.
You’re not alone. Many people experience:
- Vision problems: Drooping eyelids can affect your ability to drive and read or cause severe dry eye.
- A tired or aged look: Sagging eyelids can make you look tired, sad, or angry, regardless of age.
Your Blepharoplasty Options
Your eyes are as unique as you are, which is why there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for drooping eyelids. At Phoenix Ophthalmologists and Phoenix Eye Doctors, we combine experience with innovation to offer traditional surgical and nonsurgical treatments to address your concerns.
During your consultation, we’ll explain your options and provide recommendations so you can feel confident making an informed decision.
Blepharoplasty: Traditional Eyelid Surgery
Traditional blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct drooping eyelids by removing extra skin, fat, or muscle. It can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both.
- Before: You’ll meet with Dr. Van Buren to discuss your goals, medical history, and medications.
- During: The outpatient procedure is done under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Dr. Van Buren will make small incisions in your eyelid creases, remove excess tissue, and carefully close them with sutures.
- After: You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Cold compresses and pain medication can help ease these effects.

Neuromodulator Injections for Eyelid Drooping
Neuromodulators, commonly used as wrinkle-relaxing injections, can be injected into the muscles that control eyelid movement. By relaxing these muscles, neuromodulators can lift the eyelid and improve vision.
What to expect:
- Before: You will have a consultation with Dr. Van Buren to determine if you are a suitable candidate.
- During: The injections are minimally invasive and typically take only a few minutes.
- After: You may experience some minor bruising or discomfort at the injection sites.

Morpheus8 for Eyelid Rejuvenation
Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive procedure that uses bipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin around the eyes.
What to expect:
- Before: You will have a consultation with Dr. Van Buren to discuss your goals and determine if you are a suitable candidate for Morpheus8.
- During: The procedure involves a series of microneedles that deliver RF energy to the deeper layers of the skin around the eyes.
- After: You may experience some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort.

Is Blepharoplasty Covered By Insurance?
Before your surgery, Dr. Van Buren will perform a thorough eye examination. Photography and visual field testing are recommended to determine whether blepharoplasty would be classified as cosmetic (enhancing appearance) or functional (improving vision). If excess upper eyelid skin is limiting your vision, your insurance may cover the procedure.
